Most governments, even small municipal councils, have generally been overrun by grossly inadequate collectivists with deep pockets and serious control issues. Combine this with an overabundance of Prozac and other "feel-good" drugs and you have a numbed-down, dumbed-down (big thanks to the government schools), bureaucratic dinosaur that has no concept of liberty or justice, only perceived "efficiency". They will run rough-shod over your dreams and your lives because it doesn't fit in to their "vision" of a perfect society. Zoning Boards and City Planners are the new Communists of this day and age. They decide where you live, where you work, how you build, etc. And when they do finally "let" you have your requests, they fine (tax) you to death.
If you find their behavior disturbing and outrageous, do yourself a favor: Run for office. This is still America and you can still make a difference. Find others who share this belief and organize. The Free State Project is a good template for "getting started" Plus it offers a much more appealing "way out".
